[Archive of a California Flat Track Motorcycle Racer]

350.00

A photograph and ephemera archive compiled by Bobby Hill, a professional flat track motorcycle racer out of Oxnard active from the mid-1970's into the mid-1980's. Nearly 75 original photographs (the majority vernacular snapshots) document regional and AMA-promoted competition at tracks in Ventura, Bakersfield, and Los Angeles, as well as a 1977 sojourn to Daytona, Florida. Nearly all of the 43 album mounted snapshots document an undated (though likely about 1980) practice or qualifying session at Ascot Park, the famed Los Angeles 1/2 mile dirt oval integral to the California and national racing scene from the 1950's until its razing in 1990.

Highlights include several arresting, action 8x10's, the aforementioned Ascot album, and a series of three notated snapshots (accompanied by a small article clipping) documenting the "Before" , "During" , and "After" of a July 22, 1980 crash that left Hill to "[...] stagger off under his own power." (with the final print of the trio showing him dazed in his black and red one-piece leather riding suit while escorted by two track officials).

Some potential archival issues due to storage formats of the era, though overall a highly appealing assembly of visual and printed materials providing an uncommonly revealing glimpse into professional motorcycle competition of 1970's and 1980's Southern California, rich in period styling and design. [Motorcycles] : [Motorsports] : [Vernacular Photography]. [Archive of a California Flat Track Motorcycle Racer]. 4to. commercial sticky-page album. Illustrated vinyl over boards (a sailboat scene). 43 color snapshots mounted to rectos and versos of 10 adhesive leaves beneath plastic overlays (most approximately 5 3/4" x 4."). Prints firmly adhered to pages. Some moderate exterior wear to album, mild browning to page edges. Overall good to very good. [WITH] 31 loose photographs (21 snapshot ; 10 enlargements), a few pieces of correspondence, one event program, and about a dozen newspaper clippings. Loose contents often with verso shadowing from previous mounting in a now perished album. Overall materials about good-plus to very good.
