CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF [Group of 17 Original Costume Sketches]

750.00

An archive of 17 costume sketches seemingly from 2 different productions of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. Acquired by us from a Southern Ohio dealer who claims to have purchased them from a West Virginia estate auction sometime in the Summer of 2017 (the auction of a "96 year old lady"). Each is signed "E. Read" at lower right, though we are unable to confidently identify the artist or confirm the WV locale.

Archived newspaper reports indicate a community theatre in Beckley, WV staged at least two different productions of the play in about 1969 and 1970, which would seem about contemporary with these. Lack of confidence on our part aside, the pieces are striking and well executed, forming a formidable archive of original costume design illustration from an iconic 20th Century American play. Link to complete scans of contents here.

READ, E. : [Theatre] : [Costumes]. [Costume Sketches for CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF]. [ca. 1970]. 17 costume sketches. Each on approximately 16" x 20" art board. A combination of ink, watercolor, and pencil (with 3 pencil only, lacking any color). 5 with mounted fabric swatches. Some occasional soil from storage or handling, though overall well preserved. About near fine overall.
