[Photography] : [Engineering]. [New York Underground Photographs]. New York: Albert Rothschild, 1959. 4 silver print black and white photographs. Bordered, single weight prints, each approximately 8" x 10." Prints each crudely stapled at corners to slightly larger plain card mounts. Prints with ink photographer's date and studio stamping to versos. Lengthy ink notations to each card verso. Some mild handling wear to prints in additional to stapling, else about very good.

A series of 4 commercial photographs, captured by the Albert Rothschild commercial photographers, documenting underground construction work performed by the Cayuga Construction Corp., a prominent 20th Century foundation and subway construction contractor in the City. The photos, captured between June and September, 1959, each captured within the D-Line tunnel beneath the Libby Hotel at the corner of Delancey and Chrystie Streets on the Lower East Side.

The images appear to capture the addition of a substantial iron beam beneath the basement foundation of The Libby, likely for liability reasons. Long exposures, presumably for a lack of light, produce stark, rich images. A striking group of industrial images of what lies beneath Manhattan.
