[Organizational Scrapbook Album of the Modesto Yacht Club]

$250.00

A substantial scrapbook / photo album documenting the activities of the Modesto Yacht Club (MYC), a powerboat racing organization founded seemingly in about 1937. The contents capture outboard boat races, competitors, club environs, etc... mostly from 1937 to 1941 (when activities were almost certainly halted due to WWII fuel rationing). The final few pages of the book document about 1952-1955 and seem to include more personal material from the compiler than MYC content.

The Club utilized Lake Modesto for its competitions and activities, an extremely short-lived, manmade Lake first formed by the damming of the Tuolumne River in 1933. The original dam collapsed and was rebuilt in 1937, when this Club was formed. The rebuilt dam was condemned by the State of California in 1947and demolished, making Lake Modesto a mere distant memory, one generously documented in this dense primary source album.

[Californiana] : [Scrapbooks]. [Organizational Scrapbook Album of the Modesto Yacht Club]. [Modesto, California]: (ca. 1937-1955). Commercial album approximately 16" x 11." Beige cloth over flexible card boards, string-bound through two plastic posts at left margin. 63 tan card leaves holding dozens of clippings, ephemeral articles, and about 100 original photographs mounted mostly to rectos (and a few versos). Mild handling wear to exterior of album, contents typically well preserved and secured. About very good overall.
