A sequential pair of albums holding nearly forty original photographs of beach volleyball competition at Hermosa Beach documenting the nexus of the professional two-person volleyball scene as it emerged from the sandy shores of Southern California into an international sport (eventually becoming an Olympic event in 1996). The photographs here appear to document a single match played near the Hermosa Pier (with the iconic hangout the Mermaid Restaurant frequently appearing in the background). Named players include Billy Stetson, Bob Bruce, Gary Bruckner, Clay Howard, and John Scofield and we locate credentials on at least three of those named: Bill Stetson was an All-American volleyball player at USC during his senior year in 1982 ; Gary Bruckner played for El Camino College in about 1982 ; Clay Howard is noted as a regular on the AVP tour in about 1986.

The match here appears to be largely recreational as the AVP tournaments at Hermosa were (and are still) known to draw massive crowds. Our photographer here is anonymous, though a post-it note from the UCLA student newspaper, THE DAILY BRUIN, adhered to the interior suggests a possible venue for publication (though a diligent scouring of online-archived 1983 issues of the paper by us produced no match in print). Minor details surrounding creation aside, this remains a singular glimpse into the early years of beach volleyball competition and an exceedingly appealing photographic record of quintessential early 1980's Southern California in all its shirtless glory.

[Photo Albums] : [Beach Volleyball] : [Southern Californiana]. [Photo Albums of Hermosa Beach Sand Volleyball]. Los Angeles, California: 1983. 39 panoramic photographs adhesive mounted beneath plastic overlays to rectos and versos of leaves of two vinyl-over-board sticky page commercial photo albums (each measuring approximately 11 1/2" x 12 1/2"). Albums boldly titled in black marker to fronts: "HERMOSA / A / BEACH VOLLEYBALL / 1983." Prints each hi-gloss black and white measuring approximately 8" x 4" or slightly larger. Overlays with catalog numbers and frequent identifications in autograph felt tip marker. Prints firmly adhered to pages though adhesive appears to be nearing end of its useful life and photos appear removable with minimal effort or risk to condition. Inherent album issues aside, about near fine.
