[Snapshots of Work in a Southern California Auto Body Shop]

125.00

A small archive of snapshots capturing the workings of a Long Beach, California body shop, circa 1956-1957. Prints lack any explicit notation, though identification of neighboring businesses and matching of the buildings pictured (which largely remain as they appeared in the 1950's) to Google street view images clearly places the location in the 1700 block of E. Anaheim St. in Long Beach. Archived newspaper ads place a business called A A Auto Repair in the building at 1731 during the years captured here.

Images capture mangled autos of the era, an African-American mechanic at work on vehicles, accident scenes, tow trucks (a March 25, 1956 ad in the Long Beach Independent-Press Telegram touts "24 Hr. Towing"). An uncommon visual record of a niche automobilia trade from post-War Southern California. Link to complete scans of contents here.

[Automobilia] : [Photographs]. [Snapshots of Work in a Southern California Auto Body Shop]. [ca. 1956-1957]. 38 black and white snapshot photographs. Deckle edge prints. 31 approximately 3 1/2" square ; 7 approximately 5" x 3 1/2." A few with stamped dates at print margins. Overall about very good.
