[Souvenir Photographs of Dickson Mounds]

$50.00

A series of seven souvenir snapshot views of Dicksons Mounds outside of the small Fulton County town of Lewiston in Central Illinois. The Mounds were an unearthed Mississippian settlement and burial site complex unearthed and put on public display by a local chiropractor named Don Dickson beginning in the late-1920's. Illinois purchased the land from the Dickson family in 1945 and incorporated it into the State museum system. It remains open into current day though the burial exhibit was closed to the public in 1992.

The site was a popular attraction, frequented especially by classes of school children for decades. It has been a controversial and keen subject for research since its discovery though similar souvenir photographs are surprisingly uncommon to encounter.

[Native Americana]. [Souvenir Photographs of Dickson Mounds]. [Lewistown, Illinois]: [ca. 1940's]. Seven photographs. Black and white silver print snapshots, each approximately 3 1/2" x 2 3/4." Mild edge curling, a few prints with some red discolor around margins. Overall group good.
