An excellent group of vernacular snapshots of dirt track racing in the Midwest. Images of an October 1972 USAC Sprint Car race at the Champaign County Fairgrounds in Champaign, IL, the majority captured just in front of the main grandstand as the cars exited turn 4.

USAC open wheel sprint cars are the living legacy of the nexus of American auto racing at Indianapolis, with the basic frame, engine, and suspension designs: tube frames, front mounted engines, open cockpits, single speed gearboxes, etc.... having remained fundamentally unchanged since about the 1930’s. While never achieving the massive successes of its chiefly Southern, stock car counterpart NASCAR, tracks in remote parts of Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, etc... hold regular Friday night races, attracting a dedicated contingent of fans and serving as social gathering spots for rural communities as well as routinely drawing crowds in excess of 20,000 spectators to small towns like Rossburg,Ohio and Knoxville, Iowa during national championship and large purse events. A small, but vivid group of fan-level images.

[Photography] : [Auto Racing]. [Sprint Car Racing Photographs]. [Champaign, Illinois]: 1972. 17 Kodacolor snapshot prints each approximately 5" x 3 1/2." 2 prints with adhered paper residue over lower margins. Otherwise clean, well preserved.
