[Collection of Monthly Reports on Moonshine Investigations in Georgia]
A collection of typed monthly reports compiled by a field investigator named A.W. Schoenfeld of the U.S. Treasury Department, a "revenuer" assigned to the area in and around Savannah, Georgia concerned with enforcement of laws regarding moonshine production, transport, and sale during 1958-1960. The reports, submitted to an unnamed supervisor in Atlanta, document the investigator's daily use of time, use of a vehicle, and notes specifically numbers of stills seized or destroyed, gallons of spirits seized, number of persons arrested, etc... during 13 different months between February 1958 and December 1960.
A report from Friday February 14, 1958 notes the arrest of a Joe Delegal of Grapevine Street in Savannah where he and fellow investigators "[...] seized and destroyed 32 gallons of whiskey and filter equipment, seized and stored 1 - 1951 Plymouth [...] for forfeiture." Later in the same day from an unspecified place in Bryan County: "Observed premises of violators home and vicinity as informer purchased 15 gals. I[llegal]W[hiskey] from Charles Shuman and a Hill Negro [...] Destroyed the whiskey less sample. Invs. to continue at a later date."
Schoenfeld's most prolific month was January of 1960 when he seized 8 stills and more than 150 gallons of spirits, and made 16 arrests. Throughout the collection he notes frequent 12-14 hour work days, records extensive surveillance, work with informants, gathering of evidence, etc... providing a rich glimpse at the inner-workings of revenue enforcement in the illegal liquor trade in mid-20th Century Georgia.
[Law Enforcement] : [Alcohol]. [Collection of Monthly Reports on Moonshine Investigations in Georgia]. Savannah, Georgia: (1958-1960). More than 250 pages of typed and carbon copy material stapled into 13 separate packets, each about 8" x 10 1/2." Some mild handling wear, rust and rust offset from staples, otherwise about very good.
