[Early Photographs of Richmond, Indiana]

$450.00

A group of twenty-six card mounted photographs originating from a Henley family of Richmond, Indiana dated circa-1892. Eleven of the mounts have pencil notations recording names and locations to their versos. Each of the notated views seems to be in and around Richmond as do most of the balance (though at least three of the group seem to be near a family vacation property on Mackinac Island, Michigan).

Richmond highlights include two clear views of the grandstand and track surface of the Richmond Driving Park, a briefly-extant, 1-mile oval racing track built in 1890 and noted as an influence on Carl Fisher's design of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ; and several identified photos of Glen Miller Park, including its High Point Hotel, an ambitious yet failed resort venture built in about 1891 but demolished by 1904. Additional images include typical family views, many centered around the family's 14th Street home.

The family patriarch was Micajah C. Henley (1856-1927), a well-known industrialist and inventor who made a fortune developing and manufacturing roller skates and bicycles via his Henley Roller Skate Works and Henley Bicycle Works concerns around the turn of the 20th Century.

[Photography] : [Indiana]. [Early Photographs of Richmond, Indiana]. Richmond, Indiana: (ca. 1892). 26 sepia-toned photographs, each laid down onto uniform thick card mounts. Mounts a dark brown, each entirely edged in gilt and measuring approximately 7" x 5." 11 with pencil notations to mount versos. Mild bowing to mounts more pronounced to a few more than others, else group very good.
