[Illustration Archive of a Japanese-American Educational Book Illustrator]

$1,500.00

An archive of more than 60 pieces of original illustration artwork created by Fuyuki Barnes (1908-2009) of Columbus, Ohio, a commercial illustrator with the American Education Press Co., Columbus-based publisher of juvenille readers and originator of the popular WEEKLY READER magazine. Highlighted by 12, apparently unpublished, full cover proof illustrations from the Press' Unit Study Books series, and many illustrations which appeared in 1960's-era issues of the WEEKLY READER. Most contents relating to AEP publications, with a few unrelated though accomplished examples of commercial design (advertisements, bookplates, etc...) also included.

Born Fuyuki Kagayama, son of first generation Japanese immigrants. A 1908 Dayton city directory lists Fuyuki's Father, Shigeki Kageyama, as an importer of Japense goods and an online archived obituary (also from 1908) records the death of his Mother, presumably either during or shortly after childbirth. It appears as though his Father then returned to Japan and Fuyuki was adopted by John E. and Mayme L. Barnes of Columbus, assuming their last name.

Majority of contents appear to be 1960's, a few pieces with dates stamped to versos. An uncommon assembly of original artwork from an accomplished and unheralded Japanese-American commercial illustrator on one of the most prominent juvenille educational publications of the 20th Century.

BARNES, Fuyuki : [Illustration] . [Illustration Archive of a Japanese-American Educational Book Illustrator]. [Columbus, Ohio]: [American Education Press Co.], [ca. 1960's]. 65 pieces of original illustration. Most ink on card. Various dimensions, the largest approximately 14" x 10." Occasional light soil, handling wear. Overall contents about good to very good. Very good.
