[Portfolio of Work by a Navy Hydrographic Office Illustrator]

$500.00

A portfolio of work by Reid S. Baker (1883-1946), an illustrator with the Navy Hydrographic Office active from the late-1930's until his death in 1946. More than 65 examples of his work, the majority original illustration, populate a plain pressboard binder and are highlighted by a series of ink drawings from a seemingly unpublished series of educational cards for identifying sea buoys ; a series of lovely, color works on "Comparative Fisheries Production" in various coastal and inland water zones for 1937 ; several original color maps ; mock-ups for a poster on life jacket safety ; several seascapes documenting yachts and sea vessels ; etc...

We suspect the majority of work here was done in the context of his role with the Hydrographic Office, a now inactive section of the Navy which prepared and published maps, charts, and nautical books required in navigation, and the balance was either leisure or freelance professional work.

BAKER, Reid S. : [Illustration] . [Reid S. Baker Illustration Portfolio]. [Washington, D.C.]: [ca. 1937-1945]. Pressboard binder. Reddish-brown card with a cloth backstrip at spine. Approximately 15" x 9." With 65 bound-in examples of original, printed, or photographic examples of illustration, either mounted to card or wholly attached at two-post flexible metal binder assembly at left margin. Several additional pieces loose. Small section of card loss from corner of front wrapper panel. Interior contents well preserved. All about very good.
